The history of hockey

We'll tell you when and where it all began; from the earliest form of hockey on ice through all the developments of the game to its modern-day format. The earliest hockey rules were drawn up by students at Montreal's McGill University who also founded the first ice hockey club in 1877, the McGill University Hockey Club. As the game grew in popularity, little over a decade later in 1888, Lord Stanley of Preston visited a game and was so impressed with the emerging sport that he introduced a cup that would be competed for to establish the best team in Canada - later to be known as the infamous Stanley Cup.
